I Was Told Leaving My Gym Job Was a Mistake — Here’s Why It Changed Everything
Over ten years ago, I walked away from what many people called security.
I left a big commercial gym where I’d worked for a decade — a place that had been a huge part of my life. To some, it didn’t make sense. I had a steady job, a familiar routine, and what was seen as “safety.”
When I told one colleague I was leaving to work for myself, they said:
“If you think it’s easy, you’re wrong. If you think it’s better to work for yourself, you’re wrong. You’ve got safety here.”
At the time, I remember thinking how strange it was to say that to someone who was excited about starting something new.
What they didn’t know was that just before I left, I was actually close to quitting the fitness industry altogether.
I was tired.
Frustrated.
And my view of what fitness could be felt very small — because that gym was all I knew.
Leaving changed everything.
Once I stepped outside those four walls and rigid timetables, I realised just how broad, creative and impactful this industry really is. My enthusiasm grew. My purpose became clearer. And my love for what I do came back stronger than ever.
I realised there was so much more to fitness than sets, reps and schedules — it was about helping people feel confident in their bodies, enjoy movement and build habits that actually fit their lives.
Now, over ten years on, I can honestly say I’ve never once regretted that decision.
If anything, I’m even more excited about the future — of my business, of fitness, and of how we support people in moving more, feeling stronger and living healthier lives.
