Ever Felt Like You Don’t Belong in the Gym Weight Area?

If you’ve ever walked into the weight area and felt like everyone else knew exactly what they were doing — you’re not alone.

But here’s the truth: the weight area in the gym belongs to us too.

A few years ago, I was waiting for a bench in the gym. Both were taken, so I stood by, waiting patiently. When one finally freed up, someone else tried to jump in front of me.

I said, “Hey, I’ve been waiting!” — but was dismissed completely.

Thankfully, a few of the guys training nearby spoke up for me. Otherwise, I would’ve been ignored.

That moment stayed with me.

Even after years of lifting, I was reminded that sometimes women still have to prove they belong in that space.

Why the Weight Room Can Feel Intimidating — Especially for Women Over 40

Confidence in the gym doesn’t always come easily, especially after time away or during life transitions.

After pregnancy, postpartum recovery or perimenopause, our bodies change — and so can our sense of belonging.

When I joined a new gym after having my baby, I felt nervous.

I used to stride confidently into the weight area at 7 p.m. on my shift, telling the guys to tidy up their dumbbells 😅 — but that version of me felt so far away!

So, I booked an induction with a trainer to help me get reacquainted with the space.

That one step made all the difference.

Learning how the new equipment worked and getting a feel for the layout helped me rebuild my confidence.

How to Feel More Confident in the Gym Again

If you’re returning to exercise after 40 or through perimenopause, here are a few simple ways to ease back in:

✅ Ask for an induction. Trainers are there to help — and it’s a great way to feel more comfortable.

✅ Train with someone confident. A gym buddy can make all the difference while you find your rhythm.

✅ Start small and focus on consistency. Confidence builds from showing up, not from perfection.

✅ Remember — the weight room is for everyone. You have just as much right to that space as anyone else.

Strength Has No Age Limit

The weight area is not just a place to build muscle — it’s where we rebuild confidence, identity and self-trust.

If you’ve taken time away, whether for family, health or life’s seasons, know this:

Every time you walk back into that space, you’re rewriting the story for yourself and the next woman watching. ❤️

You belong there.
Always have, always will.
